IT
IS TIME TO CHANGE, AND HE KNOWS TO DO SO
South America is a particular political
arena where left-wing parties have conquered since last times most parts of the
continent. Revolutionary and socialist are the main patterns in these
governments bound to the common hate to the United States. Maduro, Morales and
Correa, among others, represent that way of policy as well as they called
themselves leaders of that fake and unreal revolution against neoliberal tides.
For these reasons, when an election takes part in a certain country and the
results are not in line with the current described above, political researches
should find the roots of the change and, besides being struck by that switch,
try to predict next alterations in neighboring countries.
Argentina seems to break that socialist
harmony due to the results got last week on the presidential election. Neither
results are concluding, nor the change announced is finally reached, but
currently consequences may set a starting point and feed the hopes of liberal
leaders who defends an approach to western countries far from neo-tyranic
leaders thoughts that have sank the economic and social development.
An explanation must be done from the roots
towards the branches. Argentinian electoral system is a double back procedure,
where whatever candidate has to reach a qualitative majority in order to enter
the office. If nobody gets it, another election would be held between the
most-supported parties where simply majority is needed to take the power. The Government
is ruled since 2003 by a stream named “kirchnerismo” which is close to its
neighbors’ ideology. What is more serious, these governments have used
authoritarians means disguised under the costume of democracy. Kirchner legacy have
remained an increase of foreign debt, a break to economic development and a
obstruct of external investment in Argentina, so it is a legacy which looks to
be ended due to the results acquired by its current candidate, Scioli, who was
not able to gather enough votes. Mauricio Macri, his biggest foe, technically
got the same number of votes which means a second round that will be reigned by
uncertainty. In the following round, Macri would probably count on the support
of small parties, so Scioli seems to be isolated in that struggle. Only
traditional wings may fight back that menace and become Kirchner regime as
perpetual as other South America regimes are. As Niebuhr could say, what an
irony! Those regimes reached the power under the banner of revolution and tradition
has become now their biggest source to keep and maintain that power.
Macri has proposed a different country to
the Argentinians and these changes are already beginning to reach beyond its
borders. Argentina could begin repairing its eroded international image. What
is my particular wish? First of all Macri must get the power which should means
a strong change in that battered society where corruption and confabulation
issues are shown day by day on cover pages. His program should be an approach
to a new way in the decision making process as well as provokes a domino effect
to other countries, an effect that is the only exit to South America political
life, there will be a significant revaluation of democracy on the continent as
a whole.
Will these supposed changes be real in the
whole continent or contrary it only be made on the rhetorical field? We have to
wait, however Macri announced weeks ago that if he get the power, he will
demand Venezuela releasing Leopoldo Lopez –the main opposition to Venezuelan
regime- as well as a broad and unrestricted respect for human rights. Cristina
Fernández de Kirchner and her colleagues were unable to make that kind of
announcements along her terms so new times are expected to come both in Argentina
and in Latin America. Although nothing have already change in Argentina, these
events announce something is happening besides Argentina show the world that it
is placed a step forward from its neighbors.
