Guatemalan President-Elect Suspends Presidential Transition Process

Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo claimed that influential forces inside the country's court system, who reject his victory in the presidential runoffs on August 20, are engaging in a "ongoing coup.” Arévalo stated that the groups, led by the country's Attorney General, Consuelo Porras, were attempting to breach the constitutional order and democracy by opening voting boxes.

He announced he is going to suspend temporarily the presidential transition process after Public Ministry agents raided electoral facilities and opened voting boxes. He also filed a court complaint over the incident. The TSE's president, Irma Palencia, stated that the activities placed the Guatemalan electoral system and democracy at risk and infringed the civic rights of citizens expressed at the polls.
