UK will designate Russia's Wagner a terror group, opening door to prosecution of its members | CNN
Russia's Wagner mercenary group is about to be labeled
a terrorist organization by the United Kingdom, making membership and support
of the organization illegal and subject to sentences of up to 14 years in
prison. The action was taken when the UK government was questioned about why it
took so long to outlaw the group in question. The designation will also permit
the government to seize Wagner's assets, which may open the door for Ukrainians
who want to sue Wagner in British courts for damages.
The UK government wants to designate Wagner a
terrorist group because it threatens global security. Despite the fact that
mercenary armies are prohibited in Russia, the Wagner Group registered as a
business in 2022 and established a new headquarters there. Two months after
Yevgeny Prigozhin staged a brief uprising against the Kremlin, the biggest
challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin's authority in more than two
decades, Prigozhin and the group's field commander Dmitriy Utkin perished in
what Western officials believe to be a deliberate plane crash last month.
