Poland joins the list of countries banning Russian vehicles

In a list of sanctions imposed on Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, the EU has issued a ban on all vehicles registered in Russia. Any of these vehicles will be sent back to "the non-EU country from which they came." Countries like Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have already banned cars from entering their country if they have a Russian license plate, even if the driver is not Russian. Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Head of Russia's Security Council, has called these sanctions "racist". He threatens that Moscow could suspend diplomatic ties with the EU.

At least 40 civilians killed in airstrike on Khartoum market in Sudan

At least 40 civilians died and dozens were injured in an army airstrike on a market in southern Khartoum, marking the deadliest single incident since the Sudan war began in April. The war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has intensified with neither side achieving a clear victory or seeking mediation. Drones launched some airstrikes in a district mainly occupied by the RSF, leading to several casualties. Many residents, often daily wage workers, are unable to flee due to poverty. The RSF accuses the Sudanese army of the attacks, but the army denies this, stating they target only enemy bases. Meanwhile, the RSF has spread through residential areas in Khartoum, leading the army to use heavy artillery against them, causing numerous civilian casualties. Last week, strikes resulted in 51 deaths in two days. Many hospitals are non-functional, and volunteers face challenges in tallying casualties. Médecins Sans Frontières reported another airstrike that injured at least 60 persons. The city's long-standing conflict has exhausted resources, and the Southern Khartoum Emergency Room warns of potential hospital closures. The conflict began on April 15 due to tensions regarding troop integration in a democratic transition, and international mediation efforts have been unsuccessful so far.

Disturbing Reality of Post Flooding: Libya's Search for Bodies

Rescue teams in Libya are urging for more volunteers to help find the bodies of deceased civilians. Time is urgent, as rescuers and locals describe the rapid rates of decomposition. Not only is it harder to physically retrieve the remains once they reach a certain point of decomposition, but identifying said bodies becomes even harder. It's a grim reality, representatives are quoted saying that retrieving 100 bodies a day would be ideal.

Old Letter from Vatican Archives Suggests the Pope was Aware of Nazi Death Camps in 1942

Pope Francis has released closed archives as recent as 2019, one of them being the archive of Pius XII. In this archive, a detailed letter disclosed the horrors that jews endured in Belzec, a death camp in Poland. Also in the letter, an appendix with the names of detained priests in a camp near Munich. This information is important as it makes it almost 99% certain that the Pope was aware of the war crimes used by Nazis in only 1942. Even more damning, was that this letter was amongst the Pope's personal papers. It's speculated that the Pope did not react out of fear of communism and the Nazi's treatment of catholicism. Either way, we have proof that the church was aware of genocide a while before the general public.

Top US and Chinese diplomats meet in Malta to smooth strained relations

Top U.S and Chinese diplomats, including White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and China's foreign minister Wang Yi, gathered in Malta over the weekend to address strained relations between the two nations and pave the way for a meeting between presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in November. The discussions were described as "candid, substantive and constructive." The different topics included the US-China relationship, global and regional security, Russia's war in Ukraine and the Taiwan strait situation.

Both nations agreed to continue high-level exchanges and bilateral talks concerning the Asia-Pacific region, maritime issues and foreign policy. This was the first engagement between Jake Sullivan and Wang Yi since a U.S fighter jet drowned a Chinese balloon, which the U.S viewed as a significant breach of international norms. The incident led to a canceled Beijing visit bu U.S Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and heightened tensions around U.S support for Taiwan, intellectual property disputes, and China's advancement in hypersonic missiles technology. The uncertainty surrounded the potential meeting of Biden and Xi Jinping in November at the Asia-Pacific economic cooperation gathering in San Francisco. China's leading security agency emphasized that any leader-level meeting would require genuine sincerity from the U.S.

Ukraine Neighbors Set to Keep Grain Import Restrictions in Place after E.U.'s Expire

On Friday, the E.U.'s ban on Ukrainian grain imports for five neighbors of Ukraine expired. Three of those neighbors, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia, decided to keep those restrictions in place. This choice serves as a dent in the relatively united support for Ukraine across Europe.

The counties that decided to keep the restrictions in place cited the need to protect their own farmers. They reason that the flood of Ukrainian grain into their countries will drive the price of grain down, hurting their farmers as a result. Thus, leaders of these countries claim they are not against Ukraine, rather, they are against hurting their own state.

Ukraine has not directly addressed the choice of its neighbors to ban its grain, however, President Volodymyr Zelensky commented that European Unity works only when neighbors work together, implying that if Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia truly support Ukraine, then they should allow the importation of its grain.

Dominican Republic to seal Dajabon border with Haiti in canal dispute

Dominican Republic to seal Dajabon border with Haiti in canal dispute

Fernando Abans

The natural resources conflict is one of the most basic ones, but at the same time, one of the most common ones. We have the case here of how treaties and international agreements can be easily ignored by a government, event if that means going and acting against international law. The problem in this case is not only the Haitian government trying to control all by itself the Massacre River. The answer from the Dominican Republic government has not only been fast but also direct. They will not allow any Haitian citizen to cross the border to Dominican republic, and even though this might seem a problem for both countries, the consequences for Haiti are bigger as they need constant humanitarian help and cooperation since the earthquakes of 2010 and 2021, being most of it sent via Dominican Republic because of the insecurity and terrorist groups that are in charge all over the Haitian part of the island.

Armenia will hold exercises with the US in a period of tensions with Russia

Fernando Abans

The war in Nagorno-Karabakh reactivated a conflict that had been on and off for many years. The problem was how the alliances were working because Russian support to the Armenian government was more of a mediator than the one supposed from an ally. The problem for Russia was clear: supporting Armenia meant going against Azerbaijan and its ally Turkey. For that reason, the only way to avoid a conflict with Turkey, an important country in the current invasion of Ukraine, was to be more in the middle of the conflict and not siding for Armenia in a conflicted way. This created a crisis within not only the Armenian government, but also within Armenian society who started taking places far from their Russian neighbour. This has ended even with a support to the Ukrainian cause and a closer relationship with the United States, which has ended up with these exercises taking place in Armenian territory.

first grain ships arrive in Ukraine using new route

"Two cargo ships have arrived at a Ukrainian port after travelling through the Black Sea using a new route, Ukrainian port authorities said."

Breaking news, new ships arrive in Ukraine on Saturday carrying more than 20,000 of wheat.

Authorities say that this was the first-time ships have arrived since the collapsed deal with the Russian deal. The wheat has it delivered by vessels in Egypt and Israel. Alongside with Moscow some are restricted to export food in their country. Which is bad because regular export ships are potential targets for Russia.

As Ukraine is one of the largest suppliers of crops with sunflower oil, maize and wheat. It's important to have the safety of the ships delivered safety.  In 2022 the navy blocked off the seaports and more than 20 millions of wheat was trapped at sea. This also caused problems of shortages in other parts of the world. Countries such as Yamen, Sudan, Ethiopia were infected greatly by this impact. As Russia has been the main suspect of stealing supplies which doesn’t make the case any easier.

European Union to Investigate Chinese Subsidies of Electric Cars

The European Union has announced that it will investigate subsidies given to Chinese automakers by the government in Beijing. EU Officials have cited these alleged subsidies as catalysts in creating an unfair market, as they have allowed Chinese companies to lower their prices through means unavailable to European firms.

Most Europeans view the electric car industry as vital for the creation of revenue and new jobs in Europe. Such surplus cannot exist without European companies, and Chinese subsidies have threatened the very existence of these firms by enabling Chinese companies to price their electric vehicles unreasonably low. Normally, setting prices too low is extremely unprofitable. However, Chinese firms have been able to do so because the subsidies they receive from China exceed the losses they would have incurred. Moreover, these low prices have lured customers away from European manufacturers, putting the latter at risk of going out of business. Since these subsidies are not reciprocated, EU officials contend that they have created an unfair market in Europe, which forms the basis of their investigation. During a time of increased tensions between the West and China, it is likely that this investigation will lead to trade restrictions against China.

Hugary's Orbán calls for less climate panic, more babies.

Hungary’s Orbán calls for less climate panic, more babies – POLITICO

Viktor Orbán, the prime minister of Hungary, has accused other European politicians of fomenting fear about the threat posed by climate change while neglecting the issue of declining birth rates. Hungary is one of many nations in Central and Eastern Europe seeking to reverse declining birth rates, which poses difficult funding issues for the welfare state as the population ages and the proportion of people in working age declines. The Hungarian leader intensified these policies on Thursday by declaring that the government would reduce the requirement for women to qualify for a lifelong exemption from paying taxes from four to three children.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who attended the Budapest Demographic Summit, praised Hungary’s efforts to encourage families to have more children and warned that demographic change is an existential risk for her country. It must be taken into account that Hungary’s populist right-wing government, social conservatism, and a biased media landscape are making it increasingly difficult for the country’s climate activists to get their message across. Orbán has made it clear that he isn’t concerned about climate change, and he has blamed EU climate policies for soaring gas prices.

Even though birth rates are decreasing all over Europe and this issue has become a huge problem in my continent, there is no need to deny the existence of climate change and the negative consequences that we will all face if there are no better and more ambitious measures implemented soon. Nevertheless, it is true that nowadays, women are not really interested in becoming mothers at an early age or even having more than 1 or 2 children at most.

Guatemalan President-Elect Suspends Presidential Transition Process

Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo claimed that influential forces inside the country's court system, who reject his victory in the presidential runoffs on August 20, are engaging in a "ongoing coup.” Arévalo stated that the groups, led by the country's Attorney General, Consuelo Porras, were attempting to breach the constitutional order and democracy by opening voting boxes.

He announced he is going to suspend temporarily the presidential transition process after Public Ministry agents raided electoral facilities and opened voting boxes. He also filed a court complaint over the incident. The TSE's president, Irma Palencia, stated that the activities placed the Guatemalan electoral system and democracy at risk and infringed the civic rights of citizens expressed at the polls.

Did Aliens Land in Mexico?

During a Congress session in Mexico, journalist José Jaime Maussan, presented two boxes that contained supposed mummies which were found in Peru. He called them "non-human beings that are not part of our terrestrial evolution." He claimed that the DNA showed that they are not human beings and they were dated back to 2017 where they were found deep in the Peruvian coastal desert of Nazca. When Maussan made these claims in 2017, the country's prosecutor's office reported that the bodies were “recently manufactured dolls, which have been covered with a mixture of paper and synthetic glue to simulate the presence of skin.” At this time, the bodies were not publicly unveiled so it is unclear whether or not these are the same bodies presented in 2023. Many researchers have shared their skepticism one being Julieta Fierro, who claimed that many details about these bodies "made no sense".

Musk refused Ukraine's request to enable Starlink for drone attack [Updated]

It's curious the way that information can be used to influence audience opinion and understanding. While driving to campus today, I listened to a few different radio stations. WFMT-FM 98.7, WBBM-AM 720 as well as one my mother had introduced me to WCPT-AM 820. WCPT’s commentator said something which caught my interest. So, with some minimal research (Bing search engine query) I’m crafting this blog post. Elon Musk, former chairman of Tesla, Inc., owner (and former CEO) of X Corp. (formerly known as Twitter) and, more relevantly chairman, CEO and CTO SpaceX. According to WCPT's host Musk ordered a portion of the Starlink communications network disabled over Ukraine.

This was curious to me because of the timeliness of this reporting. The Ars Technica article which I'm primarily drawing from indicates a date of 9/9/2023 [updated thereupon] as well as 9/12/2023. Additionally, there's an entry indicating January 2023. Whatever the case may be the onus of the WCPT reporting had been that the shutdown of Starlink services had tactical ramifications for a Ukrainian naval exploit. It appears that similarly to PMC Wagner, Starlink is a mercenary operation when it comes to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Science behind the Fukushima Daiichi radioactive water release : Short Wave : NPR

"Fukushima Daiichi," "Chernobyl" (which happens to be in Ukraine, a former Soviet Republic) and "Three Mile Island" (Londonberry Township, Pennsylvania) all have one thing in common: "nuclear reactor accidents." Sorry to be all doom and gloomy on such a nice autumn afternoon too. However now is as inauspicious as any other time.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has started the planned release of 343 million gallons of treated radioactive water (the radiation will be diluted to near background radiation levels) into the Pacific Ocean. In response China and Hong Kong have banned the importation of seafoods caught in certain Japanese prefectures. Meanwhile South Korean's are actively protesting the discharge (Some of Japan's neighbors are freaking out over the release of Fukushima water. Should they be? (nbcnews.com)) which the IAEA assures us is safe. I understand, I still feel leery about eating seafood (particularly shrimp) which may be sourced from the Gulf of Mexico (due to the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill (Deepwater Horizon | Oil Spills | Damage Assessment, Remediation, and Restoration Program (noaa.gov)). The alternative is purportedly worse.

Microplastics Everywhere | Harvard Medicine Magazine

For younger persons, well, you can read the article for yourselves - if you choose.

For Biden, Who Neither Fought in Vietnam Nor Protested War, Trip Offered Opportunity

On Monday, President Biden wrapped up his first visit to Vietnam. Biden and Vietnamese officials agreed to a new strategic relationship between the two countries, which will ideally help to counter China with new plans to export more goods from Vietnam. Biden’s trip to Vietnam was especially interesting because he never served in Vietnam, unlike most men his age, and thus brought a new perspective with him to Vietnam. Biden was accompanied by John Kerry, who served in Vietnam and thus had a deep personal connection to the country. Biden’s lack of connection to Vietnam offered a fresh opportunity to make diplomatic progress without reviving memories of the war and the violence between both nations that existed in the past. While Biden was the right age to serve during Vietnam, he was able to defer his service with education exemptions during college and was then determined unfit for service due to asthma at the end of college. This allowed him to avoid service and run for office instead. Biden's progress shows that Vietnam-US relations are continuing to improve, especially as the memories of Vietnam become more and more forgotten with the passing of generations. US-Vietnam relations have often stalled because previous policy-makers held grudges from the war years, but with younger men and women controlling the rhetoric, more progress can be made than ever, which will help slow China’s advancement as a trade powerhouse.

Black Sea oil rig

As Ukraine's counteroffensive has been slower than allies have expected they have taken control of oil rigs south of Crimea. These rigs were taken over by Russia after the annexation of Crimea, back in 2015 A move in the Black Sea can become big for Ukraine. These rigs are located west of Crimea. This might be a push towards getting Crimea back, as Kyiv has not been quiet about it's desire to get it back.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops. Even more so as Ukraine will be getting NATO F-16's within the next few months.

Genocide fears surge as Darfur refugees recount ethnic violence.

Genocide fears surge as Darfur refugees recount ethnic violence (nbcnews.com)

The article discusses the humanitarian crisis in Adré, Chad, where more than 200,000 refugees from the neighboring Sudan's civil conflict have sought safety. The majority of the refugees are Masalit non-Arab women and children from El Geneina and nearby communities in Sudan who have fled Arab attackers preying on them. Since mid-April, the UN believes that over 400,000 Sudanese have fled to Chad. Witnesses and El Geneina survivors who currently reside in the camp have reported seeing dead piled up on the roads in and around El Geneina. Many women and girls also claim that armed bands of men sexually assaulted them.

Due to the emphasis being given to the conflict in Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin's nuclear brinkmanship, the conflict in Sudan and the alleged crimes in Darfur have persisted in relative obscurity. Along with the murders and other acts of violence, there was "persistent hate speech against the Masalit community." The article also discusses the alleged involvement of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the conflict and the International Criminal Court's investigations into war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Darfur region.

We must take into account that since the Ukrainian War started almost 2 years ago, all the important media has focused on what is happening in that region as a result of how much this conflict has affected the countries that share Western values. Putin’s actions have put the world on hold and most treaties and international deals regarding cooperation have concentrated on shipping arms and humanitarian help to Ukraine. However, we cannot forget about the dozens of other wars, conflicts and genocides taking place in other places all over the planet. If we do that, they are condemned to misery.

Spain's soccer chief Luis Rubiales resigns two weeks after insisting he wouldn't step down

Two weeks after refusing to resign as head of Spain's soccer federation, Luis Rubiales said Sunday that he will defend his honor and innocence, but that after FIFA's suspension last month, he had no choice but to resign. Rubiales also resigned as vice president of European soccer's governing body, UEFA. Two weeks ago, Rubiales said he would not resign over his World Cup final behavior in which he grabbed his crotch and kissed a Jennifer Hermoso, one of the Spanish soccer players, without her permission.

He added that the situation had been “irrational” and that he was resigning in order to “clean up” the reputation of European football in light of the continent’s bid to host the World Cup in 2030 and to alleviate the suffering of his family. Despite his earlier resistance, it was obvious that Rubiales' continued leadership of Spain's soccer federation was no longer tenable. Rubiales added further fuel to the fire by claiming that Jennifer Hermoso did not only consent to the kiss, but that she initiated it. Rubiales remains the subject of disciplinary proceedings by FIFA.

U.S denies Cold War with China

Biden signed a historic deal with Vietnam. It is being called a Comprehensive strategic partnership that is said to be bringing former enemies closer. This is seen as a major relationship upgrade for the United States who wants this partnership so that they can generate economic growth and stability for the US while also seeing China succeed but as Biden says, “by the rules.” Biden wants this partnership to maintain stability while remaining in agreement with the international rules in place.  This relationship will help counter China’s influence in Asia in a way that will benefit the United States. It is also the US denying cold war with China in what is seen as a historic Vietnam visit.

Earthquake in Morocco

The current event that I read about touched on the earthquake that struck Morocco late on Friday. The Earthquake was a 6.8 magnitude and was the strongest one to the region in a century. There was questioning on how much aid was reaching those who were in need but on Saturday it was said that the United Nations had offered their support, but Morocco declined saying they were going to deal with it on their own. With many villages left in ruins there are over 2,000 people already dead as of Sunday, but they are currently going through the rubble and finding more deceased.

Russias drone attacks threaten Ukraines economy

 Anthony Cristiano:

There has been many nightly drone attacks in the ports and infrastructure of Kyivs vital resources. Russia has been doing this to cut off resources and supplies going into the city of Kyiv. Not only has this hurt Ukraine but has also hurt many other countries as they supply a lot of grain and other foods to countries nearby. This has been a very tough situation as over 270,000 tons of grain has been lost and Ukraine has no solution to slow this down. The president has called in for backup through the air to try and slow down these attacks but it looks like it might be too late.

The Broad Opposition Coalition selected Xóchitl Gálvez, as mayor of the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City in 2018. This means that, unless a third party gains a substantial amount of support, the next President of Mexico will be a woman. Sheinbaum, 61, is an environmental engineer who became Mexico City's first Jewish mayor and is a close ally of leftist President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Gálvez, 60, is a computer engineer who founded her own tech business. She broke into politics as the head of the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples. Women were only given the right to vote in 1953 and Mexico currently ranks at number 5 in terms of gender parity in politics. This election will take place in June of 2024.

US Withdrawal From Afghanistan Creates Problems

Since the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan, not only has the Taliban quickly ascended to power, but the drug trade is also booming. Since the departure, Afghanistan's production of opium has tripled and has a value of around $1.4 billion. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Taliban claims that the drug industry will be "crippled" within 4 years and that the Taliban have a plan to suppress both the use and sale of recreational drugs.

Having escaped prison and gone on the run, Khalife now faces additional charges on top of his terrorist charges.

Leaders present at G20 Summit accept "watered-down language about Ukraine"

The G20 Summit took place in New Delhi, India. The discussion about Russia's invasion of Ukraine remained for the most part avoided. There was a statement that avoided the condemnation of the actions made toward Ukraine to avoid conflict and embarrassment for the host. Ukraine states that A document from four diplomats was considered as something that they shouldn’t be proud of. Others have expressed their feelings saying that they too, were not satisfied by the document like President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and another European Official.

Vietnam Seeks Arms Deal With Russia as Hedge Against China

Ahead of President Joe Biden's meeting with Vietnam, a secret document outlining a proposed arms deal between Vietnam and Russia has been verified by Vietnamese officials. As Vietnam attempts to strengthen its ties with the United States, such a flagrant violation of U.S. sanctions calls into question the motives of Vietnam. Officials from the Vietnamese government have backed the alleged deal, saying that it would "strengthen strategic trust" with Russia and modernize the Vietnamese military against Chinese aggression. Considering the U.S.'s interest in limiting the expansion of Chinese influence, it will be interesting to see if this deal persists after Biden's meeting in Hanoi on Sunday. During that meeting, Biden will likely be faced with the moral choice of condemning the deal, or the strategic choice of allowing the deal to maintain U.S. interests in South Asia.

Women to Vie Presidency in First for Mexico

Next year's election in Mexico will be particularly important: for the first time in Mexico's history, two women will compete for the presidency of the country. The two candidates are Claudia Sheinbaum, from Morena party, the ruling party nowadays in Mexico with President Manuel López Obrador; and Xóchitl Gálvez, who was named last Sunday as candidate of a coalition of opposition parties led by the conservative National Action Party, or PAN. Sheinbaum leads the race for the presidency with 44% support, while Gálvez would get 27%. They say that Gálvez could result a challenge for the actual party as she is a senator with humble origins with a message of change and unity. She stated that she will push for equal pay for men and women. In the other hand, Claudia Sheinbaum is an environmental scientist who emphasizes how much women have progressed and defends a culture in which women and men are equal.

Two women running for president may encourage millions of Mexican women to break down barriers in a nation where violence against women is a real problem. The continuous fight against feminicides in Mexico emphasizes the necessity for organized measures to safeguard the rights and lives of women and girls, guaranteeing that they may live without being constantly in danger of violence.

Elon Musk Refused to Enable Ukraine Drone Attack on Russian Fleet

It was recently revealed that Elon Musk prevented Ukraine from engaging in a drone attack against the Russian Fleet in the black sea. Musk was able to exercise this power due to his involvement in Ukrainian communications through his satellite internet company, Starlink. Ukraine and Ukrainian military forces have relied heavily on Starlink for communication ever since Russia shut off internet access to the country at the beginning of the war. Since Musk has control over communications, he has the ability to stop Ukraine from committing any act of war if he so chooses. This brings into question the ethics of Musk being involved in the war and whether or not a single man should have such power. Musk currently has the ability to shut down Ukraine's entire internet infrastructure if he so chooses, which would be catastrophic. Ukrainian officials have had many problems with Starlink and Musk over the last couple of years, with Musk exerting increasing levels of power over Ukraine.

Hong Kong and south China battle wildspread flooding from record rains

Hong Kong and cities across southern China are battling flooding caused by the heaviest rains in over 140 years."

breaking news, Friday September 8th, Hong Kong's subway station was underwater and currently shut down. This flood sent over 100 people in the hospital and currently are waiting for more information. This flood was so high that people were climbing on their cars, along with high evaluated places to keep safe.

before this happened on Thursday authorities got a warning that it was going to rain about 70mm an hour. This was the first time this has happened since 1884. luckily, everyone was safe as it turned from "black" warning to an amber alert. As it was raining, they managed to record over 200mm in Hong Kong. Not only Hong Kong got affected, but south of China as well.

South of China also got hit by this rain as it was also a record since 1952. Instead of a couple of people affected by this storm, more than millions were hit by this in south of China. This showed that climate change does affect the countries and that this Storm could've had more inflicting damage.

Slovakia Election Could Shift Sentiment in a Fierce Ukraine Ally

Slovakia is at a turning point as a country, as an election approaches that could determine whether or not Slovakia continues to support Ukraine in the war with Russia or if they turn to support Russia. The current Slovakian government has steadfastly supported Ukraine and sent reinforcements to Ukraine at the beginning of the war, being the first EU nation to send military aid to Ukraine. If opposition leader Robert Fico, a former PM of Slovakia, wins in the next election, which he very well may, then the policy of Slovakia will likely become far more pro-Russia. Fico and his far-right party have created a romanticized view of Russia, allowing Russia to infuse its propaganda into the Slovakian collective conscience. As a result of this propaganda and more favorable views of Russia gaining support in Slovakia, this election could prove dire for Ukraine, leading to Ukraine losing one of its strongest supporters. Hungary is currently the only EU nation that speaks against Ukraine at times, and it would be in the interest of the Russian government to gain another ally. This potential development in Slovakia, along with the potential reelection of Donald Trump in the U.S., could prove disastrous for Ukraine and could threaten their ability to effectively fight the war if both the U.S. and Slovakia pull back support, which is very possible.

Apple shares fall after China reportedly bans iPhone use by government officials

China has banned official government agencies to bring iPhones devices into the office. This has had severe economic consequences on Apple stocks, as China provides the the company almost 20% of its revenue. The purpose of China’s government is to reduce its dependence on American technologies. But not only Apple is affected, but also other US firms like platemaker Boeing have been affected by Beijing restrictions. However, we see also that the US has taken similar measures against the Chinese company Huawei. The solution for China is to increase state-affiliated firms like banks to use local softwares and local manufacturing, minimizing the economical effects of US restrictions. This will encourage companies to diversify both their supply chains and customer concentration, and reduce their reliance on China, in case tensions worsen.

The economic tensions between China and the United States have important consequences all over the world. These two economic giants, with different political and economic systems, have engaged in trade disputes, tariffs, and technological rivalries. As a result, businesses worldwide have faced supply chain disruptions, increased costs, and uncertainty. Furthermore, these tensions have contributed to a bigger geopolitical rivalry, impacting international relations and security. Moreover, the global economy has become more fragmented, with countries and companies reconsidering their dependence on either China or the US. The world faces challenges in finding new ways for cooperation.

Ukraine condemns 'sham' elections in Russian-occupied regions.

Ukraine condemns 'sham' elections in Russian-occupied regions - BBC News

In the regions of Ukraine that it controls, Russia is staging local elections, which the West and Ukraine have blasted as a "sham" and a "flagrant violation of international law." The polls, which are scheduled to end on Sunday in four territories, that Russia does not even entirely control; are now taking place. All of the candidates, including the governors that Moscow personally selected, are either Russian or pro-Russian. Voting in front of armed Russian soldiers was required of many participants in the early voting. The Council of Europe has denounced the action as a "flagrant violation of international law, which Russia continues to disregard."

There will be election monitoring by the ODIHR and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, however there are no independent observers to certify these elections, and the final vote count has not been made public. Ivan Fedorov, the exiled mayor of Melitopol, called the elections "illegal and worthless," claiming that many of the candidates in the Zaporizhzhia region were not locals and some even came from Siberia in the far east of Russia.

Moscow claimed ownership of the four occupied territories, where elections are being held, in September of last year after organizing illegitimate annexation referendums on the future of the occupied lands. The international community also denounced the referendums as a fraud, despite indications that more than 99% of people supported the areas' transfer to Moscow's sovereignty.

Elon Musk: Withholding Internet

 Link: elon-musk-starlink-ukraine.html

Elon Musk, at the beginning of the full scale war in Ukraine gave the Ukrainians access to Starlink. This allowed the country to continue to communicate with frontlines as the war continued. The program is funded by Musk's SpaceX program. Yet, last fall he requested for help from the US to help fund the program. The President of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell, stated that the Pentagon was offering to pay for the program, but Musk went to then Twitter, to twist the story.

Current information has come out, to state that Musk is limiting Ukraine's access to Starlink, as he is worried about a larger act of war by Russia. This also comes after Musk has talked to Russian President Putin. Even though Musk's intent for the program at first was good, it no longer seems that it could be that.

Canada has a 'game plan'

 link: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/joly-us-authoritarian-game-plan-1.6939369

Canada has a plan for a far right win in the upcoming US presidential election. Mélanie Joly, Canada's Foreign Minister, has stated that Canada is preparing for the US to elect another far right president, that could leave Canada to fend for itself. Another president, like Trump, could hurt Canada on many field including trade and security. Presidents, like Trump, could lead the US from leaving NATO, which would lead to no North American protections to Canada.

Joly, refused to comment exactly what this game plan would be, but the fact that there is one is important. The American embassy, also refused to comment on the situation. We will have to wait and see if this game plan will need to be used or not.

UK will designate Russia's Wagner a terror group, opening doors to prosecution of its members.

UK will designate Russia's Wagner a terror group, opening door to prosecution of its members | CNN

Russia's Wagner mercenary group is about to be labeled a terrorist organization by the United Kingdom, making membership and support of the organization illegal and subject to sentences of up to 14 years in prison. The action was taken when the UK government was questioned about why it took so long to outlaw the group in question. The designation will also permit the government to seize Wagner's assets, which may open the door for Ukrainians who want to sue Wagner in British courts for damages.

The UK government wants to designate Wagner a terrorist group because it threatens global security. Despite the fact that mercenary armies are prohibited in Russia, the Wagner Group registered as a business in 2022 and established a new headquarters there. Two months after Yevgeny Prigozhin staged a brief uprising against the Kremlin, the biggest challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin's authority in more than two decades, Prigozhin and the group's field commander Dmitriy Utkin perished in what Western officials believe to be a deliberate plane crash last month.

Gabon's Military Coup and the International Community's Response

Following the election of Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimb to a third term, the Gabonese military has seized power and placed the President under house arrest. This coup follows a string of recent military takeovers across Western Africa; however, this coup has a few key differences that separate it from recent takeovers.

In recent West African coups, militaries have claimed that a takeover was necessary to protect their nation against Jihadist threats and separate themselves from France. In Gabon, however, the military has seized power purportedly to oust the dynasty-like rule of the Bongo family that started in 1967. Since the rule of Omar Bongo in 1967, the Bongo family has taken part in anti-democratic practices such as changing election rules closely before an election and engaging in press censorship. As a result of these activities, the Gabonese military has gained popular support across most of the country, increasing the likelihood of their remaining in power

Despite the support of most Gabonese people for the military, the international community has called for the return of Ali Bongo Ondimba. This response is likely due to the nationalization of resources that would occur if the military remains in power. Many countries and organizations, including the Economic Community of Central African States, China, and France, Gabon's former colonial power, have investments in Gabon that would be put in jeopardy under military rule.

A more positive reason for supporting the return of Ali Bongo Ondimba lies in the theory of democratic peace. According to this theory, peace is less likely when states do not have democratic governments. Accordingly, the international community may be worried that the rise of military states in West Africa will lead to conflict, which is why they support the return of Ali Bongo Ondimba.

Whether the military remains in control of Gabon or democratic rule returns, it remains certain that the outcome will have a significant impact on the international community. And if democratic rule does return, perhaps it should be led by someone not associated with the Bongo family.

Largest Fires Ever Recorded by The EU - Tragic Greece Wildfires

Ever since the European Forest Fire Information System began recording wildfires in the EU (since the year 2000), the ongoing Greek fires have shown to be the deadliest and most destructive of its time. These wildfires in Greece have destroyed roughly 200,000+ acres of land and counting. The tragic fires have been burning since August 19, 2023. They originated in Alexandropoulos, a city located in the Evros region, but the blazing has been so unforgiving its now reached the border of Turkey and expanded into its regions. So far, 20 people have died, 75 people total have been injured, & thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes.

In hopeful news, Greece has been fortunate enough to receive assistance from a multitude of other European countries: Germany, Sweden, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Slovakia, & Serbia have all delivered hundreds of firefighters & some aircraft in a trying attempt to quiet the mass destruction of its land. Top EU official, Janez Lenarcic, who specializes in crisis management, says that this has been the largest & fastest collective firefighting action in the EU bloc. 475 firefighters, 100 vehicles, & 10 aircraft are deployed and currently battling 87 raging infernos.

There is speculation as to what in particular started the fires, some say that it may have been lightning, while on the other hand, 79 people have been arrested under suspicion of arson. Despite the tragedy of these fires, Greece is known for its wildfire prevention regulations, as fire department officials have arrested 163 people on account of fire-related charges since the beginning of fire prevention season. The Prime Minister, Kriakos Mitsotakis, chaired a governmental meeting for a plan of action on responding to the devastation. Greece will not rest until these wildfires are out and until the burnt forests have been rehabilitated.
