Blog Post, In Re COP28

That The United Arab Emirates (الإمارات العربية المتحدة) hosted the conference of the parties under the UNFCCC was already a recipe for a contentious interface of parties. That His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed al Jaber [BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Southern California, a PhD in business and economics from Coventry University, and an MBA from the California State University at Los Angeles], COP28 President, UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change, minister of industry and advanced technology of the United Arab Emirates, head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and chairman of Masdar < https://drsultanaljaber.com/ >, vigorously struck back at criticisms of his conglomerates economic model came as no surprise to me. The thing which I wonder about is how it was considered advantageous to base an environmental conference in the heart of petroleum production and refining  and expect a cake walk of any sort?

His words struck a nerve with climate hawks. Critics and scientists called al Jaber’s pronouncement “farcical” and “alarming.” And John Kerry, the U.S. climate envoy, dismissed his take as out of touch with the latest scientific research: “Every decision we make should be geared to say, ‘Does this advance the 1.5 degrees or is it going to be more destructive and take us in the wrong direction?’he told CNBC.

On Monday, al Jaber tried to tamp down the uproar. At a hastily organized press conference, he said his comments had been taken out of context, and acknowledged that “the phase-down and the phaseout of fossil fuels is inevitable.” He added, “I respect the science in everything I do.”

I wonder if he drives a Tesla? He “respects the science in everything he does” and he must present a relatively large carbon footprint – as the founder and CEO of an oil extraction and procession firm. I would suppose he takes carbon reduction “very ‘very seriously’”? I suppose…

Food crisis in Mali, climate change and affects of violence.

The United Nations warns that hunger could surge across the West and Central Africa next year. This can be the cause of violence in the conflict riddled region.

Almost 50 million people can face food insecurity and 2.5 million people are already on the brink of starvation. The main driver of food insecurity is violence. Particularly in Central Sahel, past the Sahara desert has faced the most repercussions.

There are more affects  happening across the border in Burkina Faso, Mali, from climate change, server floods, and droughts. There are more than 10 millions people living in the area.

As some cities and rural places face the affects harder it has made it extremely difficult to get relief. Soaring costs have made it harder for people to buy food.

40% of people who were food insecure this year did not get aid and who did received less than 50 % of the full rations they were promised.

Merchant Vessel in Southern Red Sea was struck

Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen fired a missile to a merchant vessel sailing in the southern Red Sea. They have targeted and launched missiles and drones to ships sailing in a region that shows support for Hamas in the war with Israel. They have seized the Bahamian-flagged Galaxy Leader while it sailed in the Red Sea because it was linked to Israel.

U.S officials have stated that they also have the right to get involved and deserve the right to respond to the Houthi attacks at a time and place of their choosing.

It was confirmed that Trade operations received a report of an attack on a commercial vessel sailing 15 nautical miles west of the port of Mocha, Yemen.

The attack consisted of some damage and a fire but no casualties have been reported.

Putin Makes a Rare Trip to the United Arab Emirates

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the United Arab Emirates for the first time since the Ukraine and Russia war started back in 2022. The visit was made to strengthen relations with the UAE as well as Saudi  Arabia and to discuss the Israel-Hamas war that has been going on. Russia has been trading partners with both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, but both have remained neutral during the Russia-Ukraine war unwilling to defend the actions of Russia and get behind their mission for the war. According to the UAE's President, Mohammad bin Zayad al-Nahyan, the meeting between nations was to discuss the ties between Russia and the United Arab Emirates and to the importance of strengthening dialogue and cooperation to ensure stability and progress. The two nations confirmed their strong trade connections to each other with Russia saying that the UAE is still the biggest Arab trade partner of theirs and that they will continue to be. With Putin making his first trip to the UAE and only trip out of a few since the Ukraine War started, it is difficult to see what Russia has planned for the future, but time will tell if they strengthen their connections with other countries they trade with.

Israel: Pressure to End War Inconsistent With Support for Eliminating Hamas

 Zechariah Wease

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rebuffed on Sunday international calls to end the Gaza war, describing them as inconsistent with supporting the war-aim of eliminating Hamas. Briefing his cabinet, Netanyahu said he had told the leaders of France, Germany and other countries: "You cannot on the one hand support the elimination of Hamas and on other pressure us to end the war, which would prevent the elimination of Hamas".

Hungarian Truckers to Protest at Ukraine Border Crossing on Monday

 Zechariah Wease

Hungarian truckers plan to protest near Hungary's main border crossing with Ukraine on Monday, aiming to slow the movement of trucks as they demand restrictions on Ukrainian haulers working in the European Union, police said on Sunday. Police have given permission for the protest in which about a dozen trucks will partially block the main road leading to the Zahony crossing, police said in a reply to emailed questions from Reuters. Police did not say how long the protest would last but website index.hu reported the plan was to partially block the road leading to the border until the end of December. Truckers from Ukraine have been exempt from seeking permits to cross into the European Union since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Haulers across eastern Europe have sought to win restrictions on the number of Ukrainian trucks entering the EU.

Israel warns Houthi Rebels in Yemen.

Israel is prepared to act against Houthi rebels in Yemen to disrupt shipping in the Red Sea if the international community fails to do so. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had spoken with US President Joe Biden as well as European leader about Houthis targeting merchant ships with alleged Israeli links. “Israel is giving the world some time to organize in order to prevent this but if there isn’t to be a global arrangement, because it is a global issue, we will act in order to remove this naval siege,” Hanegbi said. Hanegbi makes this statement to inform the public that Israel is ready to act against Houthi if they are forced to.

The UN secretary-general invokes 'Article 99' for the first time in decades

For the first time since 1971, Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, invoked Article 99 of the U.N. Charter. He did this to warn the Security Council of the humanitarian catastrophe going on in Gaza and is calling for an immediate cease-fire. Article 99 allows the secretary-general to inform the Security Council on matters he thinks threaten international peace and security. The United States has the power to veto resolutions, and given its close ties with Israel, it is unfortunately unlikely that this will go through.

Hamas hostages drugged before release to Israel to look happy

 Zechariah Wease

The hostages who have been freed by Hamas from the Gaza Strip were given tranquilizer pills before being transferred to Israel in a bid to make them appear happier following their treatment in captivity, a report says.  Dr. Hagar Mizrahi, the head of the Israeli Ministry of Health’s medical division, told the Israeli government about the alleged drugging's on Tuesday, according to The Times of Israel.  The newspaper reports that Mizrahi named the drug clonazepam, which is known outside of Israel as Klonopin and Rivotril. It would have made the hostages appear calm, happy and upbeat after suffering physical abuse, deprivation and psychological terror at the hands of the Palestinian terrorist group, the report said. The National Institutes of Health describes clonazepam as being "used to relieve panic attacks," among other purposes.

Record month for ransomware attacks

Beeping Computer confirms what I'd heard on a BBC podcast September 2023 saw the greatest rise in ransomware attacks to date. The exact reasoning isn't provided just the outcome. Once upon a time health care facilities received a marginal pass  - this is no longer the case. It's all about the Benjamin's. In terms of targeted regions, North America took the lion's share with 50%, Europe followed with 30%, and Asia was third with 9%.

There was a report which I need to look into. Purportedly a major ransomware group was broken up in Ukraine.

 POLITIQUICKIES

FAST NEWS

Unfortunately for the majority of the semester, I’d be posting to the wrong board, so here is a compilation of this semester’s Politiquips, the general global news headlines I found across multiple sources, including CNN, FOX, SkyNews, MSNBC, and several independent news sources. Enjoy the look back on everything that happened these last few months!

Week 1

August 30th

A New Friendship has been formed! The US has gotten Japan and South Korea to drop their disputes and agree to a new security pledge that would see all 3 countries defend each other. South Korea and Japan have famously hated each other since the Second World War, but after meeting at Camp David with President Biden - the two countries will now pursue peace and mutual security as friends, not foes. The threats of China and North Korea and the friendship of the United States have brought them together. This comes as America seeks to build an Asian NATO

Week 2

Sept 7th

China Drops New Map Claiming India, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Russia, and Bhutan China dropped its new map and its neighbors are upset. China’s new map shows them claiming part of India. India says the map is absurd and that their claims have no basis. The map also shows them infringing on Malaysia’s maritime border so Malaysia has rejected their unilateral claims. China’s map also claims parts of Russia, Japan, Vietnam, Bhutan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and all of Taiwan. It may seem silly for these countries to get very upset over what are essentially just lines on a piece of paper. But lines on a map represent people’s identities, their validation, things they’ve fought thousands of years for. It’s never just a line on a piece of paper

Week 3

Sept 16th

A flight from Atlanta to Barcelona was forced to turn around 2 hours into the journey because a passenger had diarrhea throughout the airplane. Passengers say it dribbled down the aisle and that they tried to cover up the smell with vanilla but it just smelt like vanilla diarrhea. I do feel bad for the diarrhea passenger because not only did you cover the plane in diarrhea but then you had to sit in it for the next 2 hours, and the rest of the plane is pissed at you for ruining their vacation. They’re getting off the plane and pointing at you saying “That’s the diarrhea guy” and then just when you think the humiliation is over… it’s front-page news across the country.

Week 4

Sept 21st

Ukraine destroyed a Russian submarine and a landing ship. Using British Storm Shadow missiles, they hit a Russian dry dock in Crimea. Both vessels have been destroyed. The submarine is only one of 6 that Russia has in the Black Sea, and Russia frequently uses them to fire cruise missiles at Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly said that attacking this area would result in a nuclear response. These missiles hit the same area that Elon Musk blocked Ukraine from hitting earlier in the year by turning off the internet. Ukraine’s attack would have nearly taken out the entire Russian Black Sea fleet, but General Musk blocked it. As a result of the aborted attack, the Russian Black Sea Fleet would proceed to fire hundreds of missiles at Ukrainian cities in the following months, causing widespread destruction and numerous civilian casualties. So far though, it’s been over 12 hours and Russia’s super spooky nuclear threat appears to be yet another bluff. If you’re threatening to use nukes, you’ve already lost and if you believe their nuclear threats - you’re a sucker. Do you know who also doesn’t buy the nuclear threats? The United States. They will be providing Ukraine with the Army Tactical Missile System, which fires ballistic missiles that have a range of 300 kilometers… So more strikes inside of occupied Crimea and Russia are coming.

Week 6

Sept 30th

The US Navy may be creating UFOs unintentionally and that is likely why there are increasing sightings. For at least the past two decades, the US Navy has been researching Laser-Plasma, and 3 years ago, they patented the technology. It’s supposed to protect stealth aircraft by using bursts of laser plasma to create or project mid-air images, these images will trick incoming missiles into hitting the hologram. These holograms, for lack of a better term, can be picked up in several wavelengths including infrared, and can appear as real objects in them. This technology has also been used to create laser-plasma balls that can transmit human speech, whatever that means. Perhaps the Pentagon changing the term from UFO, an unidentified flying object, to UAP, an unidentified aerial phenomenon, is further evidence of this. So it seems like aliens are once again not real but who’s to say?

Week 7

Oct 4th / Oct 7th (Forgot I had posted this week)

For the first time in American history, the speaker of the house has been removed. Needing only 5 votes to can him, McCarthy’s fellow Republicans cannibalized him after he worked with Democrats to prevent the government from shutting down. Democrats called McCarthy a reneger and refused to save his speakership. Kevin was the speaker for 270 days, which is about 25 Scaramuccis

Israel has been invaded and is at war. Hamas just launched a massive sneak attack on Israel and has invaded the country via land, air, and sea. The terrorists have reportedly captured and are occupying several cities in Israel and are reportedly indiscriminately killing civilians in those cities. Israel says at least 100 Israelis have been killed and at least a thousand are injured, these numbers are expected to grow. There are reports that at least 100 Israelis have been kidnapped and are being held as hostages. Some of which have allegedly been brought back to Gaza and Hamas is reportedly threatening to execute them. And reports say that more than 5,000 rockets have been fired at Israel. Hamas claims it captured senior Israel officers, including a former general. This is a very sophisticated attack and the timing is reportedly intentional as today is the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. Israel has promised a biblical response, adding that Hamas has opened the gates of hell.

Week 9

Oct 19th

Israel has started to strike back at Hamas after last week’s massive attack. They have started to hit buildings in Gaza with airstrikes and Israel’s security council has reportedly authorized a ground invasion. Palestine says at least 300 people have been killed and more than 1,600 have been injured in Israel’s initial response. The IDF says it’s killed hundreds of terrorists in the past few hours. Israel has reportedly activated its reserve forces as it gears up for a massive retaliatory operation. Hamas is reportedly continuing to strike ambulances in Israel with drones as open combat with the IDF has been reported in 22 locations. UN Peace Keepers have reportedly been withdrawn from southern Lebanon as there are reports of Hezbollah fighters amassing on Israel’s northern border. They’ve allegedly threatened to invade Israel if they go through with the ground invasion. The Taliban have also reportedly asked its neighbors to give them passage so they can take Jerusalem. The US has issued a warning to any parties, countries, and organizations looking to take advantage of the situation. Saying the US stands ready to support Israel.

Week 10

Oct 27th

The US has warned Iran to not escalate the conflict with Israel, this comes as the US has deployed another carrier and is preparing troops for deployment. Israel turned the water back on for Gaza after President Biden pressured them to do so. Biden is also pushing Israel to demonstrate restraint. Acknowledging that Israel has a right to destroy Hamas but not a right to subject Palestine to collective punishment. He also warned against occupying Gaza. Israel’s ground offensive is still expected but keeps getting delayed by rain

Week 11

Nov 7th

A Chinese fighter jet came within 10 feet of a US B-52 bomber over the South China Sea earlier this week, that’s what you’re seeing on screen right now. The US says the Chinese pilot was “flying at an uncontrolled excessive speed, flying below, in front of, and within 10 feet of the B-52, putting both aircraft in danger of collision.” In response to this, China released a video showing a US warship doing what they call “close-in harassment” on August 19th, which is what you’re watching right now. China says the US is the real provoker, risk-taker, and disrupter. However, the US says that China has engaged in risky and aggressive behavior in the skies over 180 times since the Fall of 2021. Good lord, which one of them is gonna yell “mom” first?

Week 12

Nov 8th

In a very rare announcement, the US announced the arrival of one of its most secretive assets to the Persian Gulf. A nuclear submarine. The message they’re sending is clear and the recipient of that message is Iran and its proxies. The USS Florida is one of four Ohio Class Submarines that carries 154 tomahawk missiles that can each carry a 1,000-pound warhead and travel up to 1,500 miles. It also deploys navy seals. These subs are known as the four horsemen of the Tomahawkalypse.

Week 14

Nov 22nd

The US is at least mildly pissed at Israel according to Axios. Yesterday the Pentagon’s chief called his Israeli counterpart to issue a warning about trying to provoke a war with Hezbollah because the US believes that this will cause a regional war that will draw the US and several other countries into the conflict. Israel flatly denies that this conversation happened but Axios says their sources in both countries claim the call was very direct and frank. The US conducted another round of airstrikes in Eastern Syria on bases used by Iranian proxies and the IRGC.US Forces have been attacked 4 times by Iranian proxies since the airstrikes yesterday. There have now been at least 50 attacks on US forces since October 17th according to the Pentagon. The New York Times reported that President Biden has rejected more aggressive bombing options proposed by the Pentagon in hopes of not escalating into a war with Iran. Some now saying his hands are looking to be increasingly tied after today’s attacks. The Biden administration sent an advisor to Lebanon last week to deliver a warning to Hezbollah via Lebanon's parliament according to V-O-A. The warning was to not escalate the conflict. The advisor reportedly returned to America with the impression that Hezbollah wasn’t interested in an actual war, Axios alleges. Despite this, Israel and Hezbollah keep climbing the escalation ladder with each other, hoping one will give up.

Large Earthquake in the Philippines

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck this past Saturday off the southern Philippine coast, prompting many citizens to leave their homes around midnight after Philippine authorities issued a tsunami warning. The quake hit at a depth of 32 kilometers/ 20 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Due to the great depth that the earthquake hit, the tsunami warning center expected tsunami waves to hit the southern Philippines and parts of Indonesia. Luckily, this was not the case, and there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties throughout the Philippines

Sweden Expects its NATO Membership to Be Approved by Turkey "within weeks"

Back in May of 2022, Sweden filed a formal application to join NATO and has been waiting for the application to be approved ever since. The application is waiting for neighboring countries Hungary and Turkey to approve it so they can be admitted into the alliance. As of April 2023, Turkey's president said he would approve the application in order to bring Sweden into the alliance, but the approval from Turkey is waiting on the Turkish Parliament to also agree to bring them in. Turkey and Hungary have been reluctant to bring Sweden into NATO for different reasons. Turkey has raised concerns about Sweden harboring militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party. But Hungary has questioned Sweden's comments that criticized Hungary's government and especially attacked their lack of democratic values. As of recently, there has been reports that Turkey's government has been leaning towards approving Sweden's entrance into the alliance and that they should approve it in the next few weeks. This would bring Sweden one step closer to jointing the alliance becoming a NATO country, but if this ends up happening will only be known in the next few weeks.

Russian Police Raids Bars after LGBTQ+ Ruling

Russian security forces raided gay bars/clubs in Moscow on Friday December 1st, less than 48 hours before Russia's court banned the "global LGBTQ+ movement" calling it an extremist group/organization. President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly put emphasis on "traditional family values". Eyewitnesses told journalists that clubgoers’ documents were checked and photographed by the security services. Several LGBTQ+ venues have closed down. The ruling effectively bans organized activity to defend the rights of LGBTQ+ people. Russia has a history of suppressing LGBTQ+ rights and earlier this year also passed a law prohibiting gender transitioning procedures and gender-affirming care for transgender people.

Bill Gates Comments on Climate Change

The Dubai climate summit, according to Bill Gates, will makes great strides in recovering climate change. Despite this however, Gates states that with the current situation of the world, we can expect to overshoot the 2C temperature change that scientists claim to have irreversible results on the planet. The summit could not have come at a more perfect time as countries are on track to record some of the hottest years to date. Gates says that as we are on track of going over the limit, just how bad we are is to be determined at the summit, it is important to help people to adapt to the new climates. Currently, pledges under the Paris Agreement are not on track to help reduce planetary temperatures and more action will be needed. Gates ads that we will have many positive things in to the future, but it is important to make climate change a priority, especially as there is much polarization on the topic.

Israel Blasts America

During the Global Conference for Israel, Gilad Erden, the United Nations Ambassador for Israel criticized the US for not making criticisms towards Hamas and their attacks. Despite these comments, America has stood by Israel throughout the attacks from Hamas. Erden went on to call America Hyprotics and a house of lies. Later on, he also claimed that by not calling out Hamas, they are in turn, supporting terrorism. On Wednesday, The U.N. ordered a two-state resolution between Israel and Palestine. The attacks have continued.

International Aid Funding

Link: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/crunch-time-israel-ukraine-aid-lawmakers-return-congress-recess-rcna126175

With 12 days left of the government year, the interest in international aid is at the forefront. Democrats are starting to divide in aiding Israel. Bernie Sanders says that the blank check policy should end. Republicans are divided in continuing to aid Ukraine. Tom Cotton stated that Biden does not care about "securing the US border." The Democratic party says that this shows how the Republicans are just ready for Trump to hand Ukraine back to Russia.

It is important to remember that we have aided both countries since the start of these conflicts. It would be enormous if we just stopped aiding them. Ken Buck said he favors aid to Israel and Ukraine — if they’re paid for: “We have three weeks of legislative business ahead of us, if not more, and we can get those things done and they’re very important to get done."

4-year-old Hamas hostage set free

Abigail Mor Edan, the youngest U.S. citizen held by Hamas, was among the group of hostages released back to Israel on Sunday. Riots Breakout in Dublin

Riots have recently broken out in Dublin as a result of a stabbing in the city which left a 5 year old little girl, and a teacher’s aid in critical condition. 2 other children were also stabbed, but with less severe injuries. The riots are considered to be anti-immigration from what the prime minister called “far-right hooligans.” Cars, buildings, buses, and much more have been burned and destroyed in central Dublin, and there have been 34 arrests made. The Prime Minister of Ireland sent over 400 police officers to Dublin to try and get control of the situation. The commissioner of the police force, Drew Harris said that social media is partly at blame for its radicalization of people nowadays.
