Russian Police Raids Bars after LGBTQ+ Ruling

Russian security forces raided gay bars/clubs in Moscow on Friday December 1st, less than 48 hours before Russia's court banned the "global LGBTQ+ movement" calling it an extremist group/organization. President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly put emphasis on "traditional family values". Eyewitnesses told journalists that clubgoers’ documents were checked and photographed by the security services. Several LGBTQ+ venues have closed down. The ruling effectively bans organized activity to defend the rights of LGBTQ+ people. Russia has a history of suppressing LGBTQ+ rights and earlier this year also passed a law prohibiting gender transitioning procedures and gender-affirming care for transgender people.
