For the first time since 1971, Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, invoked Article 99 of the U.N. Charter. He did this to warn the Security Council of the humanitarian catastrophe going on in Gaza and is calling for an immediate cease-fire. Article 99 allows the secretary-general to inform the Security Council on matters he thinks threaten international peace and security. The United States has the power to veto resolutions, and given its close ties with Israel, it is unfortunately unlikely that this will go through.
