Sweden Expects its NATO Membership to Be Approved by Turkey "within weeks"

Back in May of 2022, Sweden filed a formal application to join NATO and has been waiting for the application to be approved ever since. The application is waiting for neighboring countries Hungary and Turkey to approve it so they can be admitted into the alliance. As of April 2023, Turkey's president said he would approve the application in order to bring Sweden into the alliance, but the approval from Turkey is waiting on the Turkish Parliament to also agree to bring them in. Turkey and Hungary have been reluctant to bring Sweden into NATO for different reasons. Turkey has raised concerns about Sweden harboring militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party. But Hungary has questioned Sweden's comments that criticized Hungary's government and especially attacked their lack of democratic values. As of recently, there has been reports that Turkey's government has been leaning towards approving Sweden's entrance into the alliance and that they should approve it in the next few weeks. This would bring Sweden one step closer to jointing the alliance becoming a NATO country, but if this ends up happening will only be known in the next few weeks.
