Australian port operator hit by cyber-attack says cargo may be stranded for ‘days’

 Mathis Timouk

Australia's main ports operator, DP Wold Australia, recently faced a cyber-attack, causing the closure of its ports in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Fremantle. The company detected the breach on Friday, prompting the disconnection of its internet to halt unauthorized access, leading to disruptions in key pro operations systems. DP World aims to resume operations within days, with the Australian government coordinating the response and the Australian Cyber Security Center providing technical guidance. The former head of the Australian Cyber Security Center, Alastair MacGibbon, highlighted the priority of getting containers moving again. While unauthorized access occurred, the nature of the compromised data remains undisclosed. Emergency supplies, particularly medical items can be selectively retrieved, but a substantial portion of cargo remains stuck.
