Because the United States & Russia have the most nuclear weapons in the world, they both also have the most historic agreements to help reduce their spread globally. Today, President Vladimir Putin signed a law that revokes Russia’s ratification of the CTBT (Comprehensive Nuclear-Ban Treaty) that bans nuclear testing. He states that he wants to mirror the U.S, since we never officially ratified the treaty, & thus are de-ratifying it themselves. This move was more symbolic than practical, however, and leaves one truly significant remaining pact between the two countries: the New START treaty. It expires in 2026 & despite Putin claiming he would suspend Russia’s participation, they have stuck to the treaty limits.
