Germany notifies the EU of border controls at the Polish, Czech and Swiss frontiers
Fernando Abans
Schengen area is, once again, at risk of becoming a
blurry idea as State Members are putting border controls with other countries
as a matter of “national security”. The terrorist attacks suffered a few weeks
ago, first in France and later in Brussels, Belgium, left no other choice to
European countries but to prepare for new terrorist threats. The problem is
that most of State Members of the European Union do not have border controls
with each other in virtue of the Schengen Area agreements put in place many
decades ago. However, these agreements include exceptions, as always, being one
of them precisely the matter of national security. As there are many countries
where immigration has become uncontrolled and migration flows are rising,
Germany decided to put back border controls, but this measure is something that
other countries could start doing soon. This will not only undermine Schengen
area, but also the tools and capacity of the European Union that Schengen area
is a system that works, and no threats can put it in danger.
