As a result of increased amounts of earthquakes, residents of Icelandic town Grindavík are being evacuated because of the heightened possibility of a volcanic eruption. After the evacuation, one resident per home was allowed to revisit with police and government presence to grab “essential items” and pets, but only received a 5 minute timeframe for the visit. There have been many 4-5 magnitude earthquakes on the island, which scientists say point to a potential eruption. Iceland is home to 33 different volcanic systems and it’s likely one erupts within the next days or even hours. The government of Iceland has also declared a state of emergency in wake of the possibility of volcanic activity.
