Ancient Discoveries

Discoveries found in a Cueva de los Murcielagos or “Cave of the Bats” found in Albuno near Grande made scientist reconsider what they thought they knew about earlier civilizations. 76 of the items that were dug out by miners in the 19th century have now been carbon dated. There were 20 pairs of sandals that are at least 6,200 years old and other woven objects that date back 9,500 years. These items were so well preserved because of the low humidity in the cave.   The findings in this cave in Spain indicate evidence of skills in the Mesolithic hunter-gatherer societies that were not previously thought to be. The woven baskets were made with such good quality and complexity that it made scientist question the simplistic assumptions that had for these early human communities and what their abilities were.
