Japan seeks the dissolution of the Unification Church

On Friday, the Japanese government asked a court to order the Unification Church in Japan to dissolve. This comes after an investigation into the church following the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022. The suspected shooter Tetsuya Yamagami claimed he shot the prime minister because he believed he was associated with the Unification Church. Yamagami's mother was a part of the church and donated excessively, bankrupting the family. The government concluded that the church pressures its followers to make "exorbitant donations" and violates the 1951 Religious Corporations Act. Ruling lawmakers have since cut ties with the group. Critics argue that if the dissolution of the Unification Church goes through, they will still be able to run as a group and won't be under the control of Japan's Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs.
