At Least 11 U.S. Citizens Were Killed in Israel, Biden Says, and Others May Be Captives of Hamas

According to President Biden, at least 11 Americans have died so far in Israel as a result of the conflict with Hamas, and many more could be being held captive by Hamas. Biden has expressed that while the tragedy taking place in Israel may seem like a distant and remote event, it deeply affects many Americans and will have a real effect on American lives. Many Americans have a deep personal connection to Israel or Palestine through their heritage and backgrounds, and it is believed that the conflict will result in more division between Muslims and Jews in the U.S. and will result in hostility from both sides. While the US has not taken any direct military action to help Israel, it has denounced the actions of Hamas and has sent navy vessels and an aircraft carrier closer to Israel to help show support. Furthermore, the military is sending munitions to Israel to help in the fight and could, at some point, engage in the conflict. John Kirby, a spokesperson for the government, has said that currently, the focus is freeing hostages and working with the Israeli government to free Americans being held captive. In an attempt to display solidarity, the White House will light up with blue and white in support of Israel, similar to landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and 10 Downing Street in London.
