King Charles to acknowledge ‘painful’ colonial past on state visit to Kenya

 Mathis Timouk

During an upcoming state visit to Kenya, King Charles will address the "painful aspects" of Britain's historical actions in the country. This visit following an invitation from Kenya's president William Ruth, comes as Kenya celebrates its 60th independence anniversary from Britain. Despite the close ties that the two nations have, there is a dark history marked by the violent colonial uprising in the 1950s. The UK, that recognized the torture and other ill-treatment during this period, expressed regret in 2013 and paid reparations to around 5200 individuals. King Charle's visit from October 31 to November 3 marks his first visit to a commonwealth nation as king. Both King Charles and Prince William have expressed remorse over the impacts of slavery, but they haven't issued formal apologies yet.
