China says Israel's actions in Gaza have 'gone beyond self defense' (cnbc.com)
China has urged Israel to cease its collective
punishment of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, saying that Israel's
actions have surpassed the bounds of self-defense and that it should heed the
call of the international community and the UN Secretary-General to do so. These
remarks were made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a series of phone
discussions with world leaders over the weekend as they attempted to stop the
Israel-Hamas crisis from spreading into a larger Middle East conflict.
The safety of civilians, the opening of humanitarian
aid channels, and the protection of Gazans' basic needs are China's top
priorities. Wang also urged all parties to avoid worsening the conflict and to
start talking again right away. China has been actively urging a truce by
talking with all parties. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that
Israel has the right and duty to defend itself against attacks from Hamas, but
that it must do so in a way that upholds shared values for human life and human
dignity, taking all reasonable precautions to avoid harming civilians. Blinken
was rushing through the Middle East in an effort to prevent a wider war in the
region.
