The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. This marks the first time in American history that a Speaker has been forcibly removed.
McCarthy's removal comes as a result of infighting within the Republican Party. Fellow Republican Representative Matt Gaetz, one of McCarthy's staunchest critics, is chiefly responsible for McCarthy's ousting. Gaetz and other conservative Republicans assert that McCarthy colluded with Democrats to pass a last-minute budget that kept the government open, allowing legislation aligned with the Democratic Party's agenda to move forward.
Despite Gaetz's accusations, every Democrat voted to remove McCarthy, which seems counterintuitive if he is indeed willing to work with Democrats.
Overall, McCarthy's removal serves as a symbol of the division within the Republican Party and the American political system as a whole. This division has manifested itself in a record-low number of bills passed by the U.S. Legislature, which will have both domestic and global implications for the future of the U.S.
