Beijing and Manila are blaming each other for two collisions between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the disputed South China Sea. The clashes took place near Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands, a contentious area where China frequently asserts its territorial claims. The Philippines claims a Chinese coast guard vessel collided with a Filipino resupply boat, while China states the resupply boat ignored warnings and acted dangerously. In another incident, a Philippine coastguard vessel was reportedly hit by a Chinese Maritime Militia vessel. China, however alleges the Philippine boat intentionally caused the trouble. The collisions did not result in any injuries, but damage was reported. The South China Sea, claimed almost entirely by China despite an international ruling against it, is a significant trade route. The incidents increase the concerns of possible confrontations in the region, and experts believe these might be deliberate moves from China to test both Philippine and US responses. The US reaffirmed its mutual defense agreement with the Philippines, condemning China's actions.
