On Saturday, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake killed over 2,000 people and injured at least 1,000 more in Afghanistan. In the process, the earthquake destroyed over 1,200 homes. The quake struck 25 miles west of the city of Herat. Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in Asia and does not have a good record of responding to natural disasters. This concern has been amplified ever since the Taliban took over the country in 2021, as the Washington has cut off federal funding since the switch in government. According to OCHA, over 600 families have been impacted by the earthquake. There are concerns that the number of casualties will increase in the coming days.
